A Farm-to-Table Experience at Granor Farm with My Son Beau

Each summer before the new school year begins, I try to do something special with each of my kids one-on-one. Last year, my son Beau and I hit the road north to Michigan’s upper peninsula on a rock-hunting mission - stopping at all the best beaches for Petoskey stones, agates, and fossils. As enthusiastic cooks and bakers ourselves, Beau and I decided on a different experience this year - a farm-to-table dinner at Granor Farm.

I've been a longtime admirer of Abra and her work at Granor. Nestled in the heart of Three Oaks, Michigan, Granor Farm is a testament to sustainable, organic farming, something I've been interested in since before my Saskatoon years. Founded in 2006, the farm has flourished under careful stewardship, offering the local community a taste of organic goodness from its fertile lands. From its humble beginnings in 2007, producing over a hundred varieties of organic and heirloom vegetables, herbs, flowers, and grains, to its innovative grain program, Granor has always been ahead of the curve.

The evening began with a delightful, non-alcoholic sparkling beverage served in stemless glass champagne flutes to be enjoyed on the expansive Granor lawn. Beau and I took the opportunity to play a few hilarious rounds of tetherball before the tour began, which got us both laughing. Despite being the only non-adult in attendance, Beau was treated with the same warmth and respect as every other guest, making the evening even more special.

Abra then took us on a guided tour of the farm's vast grounds. As she painted a vivid picture of Granor's history and day-to-day operations, I couldn't help but marvel at the farm's commitment to organic produce and its love for the Three Oaks community. With programs like the CSA allowing members to purchase a season's worth of vegetables in spring and receive weekly baskets of produce, Granor's impact is deeply felt.

While the farm is primarily recognized for its organic produce, I was genuinely intrigued by its architectural feats. The preserved two-story farmhouse constructed circa 1920 painted in pristine white, the modern greenhouses and hoop houses, and the iconic barns all echo Granor's esthetic commitment to creating the modern farm. Each structure, from the farmhouse's corrugated metal panels to the tall barn that doubles as a classroom, workshop, kitchen, and housing for interns in the summer, speaks of a unique blend of functionality and design.

But the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the dinner. An array of dishes, each more delicious than the last, showcased Granor's fresh produce and other local ingredients. From Spiced Soy Beans and Tomato Risotto with Tapenade (Beau’s favorite) to Pork Loin with Wild Rice Kale Salad, every bite was a journey of flavors, further accentuated by wines curated by Ellie Mullins of P+E Bottle Shop.

It was a night Beau and I won't forget anytime soon. As we made our way home, I felt deeply grateful for the memories we'd created. Granor Farm, with its commitment to organic farming, community support and engagement, and architectural brilliance, offers more than just food; it's an experience I was elated to share with my son.
